CV Tips for South Africa: What Employers Really Look For

The most competitive queue in the country

South Africa's job market is famously tough — for every opening in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban there is a long virtual queue of candidates. In a country with three capitals (Pretoria runs government, Cape Town hosts Parliament, Bloemfontein holds the courts), there is one universal rule of hiring: the CV that is easiest to read gets the interview.

You can't control the unemployment statistics. You can completely control how your CV reads. Here is what actually matters locally.

Lead with matric — and the right codes

Matric is the first filter

For a huge share of South African jobs, matric (your National Senior Certificate) is the baseline requirement, and recruiters look for it immediately. State it plainly: "Matric — Hoërskool Bellville, 2022". If you passed with a Bachelor's pass, say so. If you didn't finish Grade 12, list your highest grade honestly — and balance it with courses and experience.

A driver's licence is a qualification here

In South Africa, a driver's licence is listed by code, and for many jobs it is a hard requirement, not a nice-to-have. "Code 8 (B)" for cars, "Code 10 (C1)" for trucks, "Code 14 (EC)" for heavy articulated vehicles. If you have one, put it in a visible spot near the top — driver, delivery, sales-rep and technician roles filter on it.

Foreign qualifications need SAQA

If you studied outside South Africa, employers will expect a SAQA evaluation of your qualification. Mention it on the CV ("Diploma in Accounting — SAQA evaluated, NQF Level 6") and you remove the recruiter's biggest doubt before they have it.

What to leave off (more than you think)

Older South African CV templates ask for an astonishing amount of personal data: ID number, race, religion, home address, marital status, number of dependants. You do not need most of it at application stage.

  • ID number: not on the CV. The employer can ask for it at offer stage for verification. On a document emailed to dozens of strangers, it's an identity-theft risk.
  • Race and gender: companies do collect Employment Equity information, but on their own forms, in their own process. Your CV doesn't need to volunteer it.
  • Photo: not expected in South African corporate recruitment.

Name, phone (with WhatsApp), email, suburb and city. Done.

Describe real work — including the informal kind

Recruiters respect hustle when it's described concretely. Helping at a family spaza shop is retail and stock management. Selling airtime or running deliveries is sales and logistics. Being treasurer of a stokvel — managing monthly contributions and payouts for twenty members — is financial responsibility most candidates can't demonstrate. Volunteering at an NPO in your township is legitimate work experience.

Write each one with an action verb and a number: "Managed weekly stock and till for a spaza shop serving 100+ customers a day". Our guide on writing a CV with no formal experience shows the full method.

Where to apply — and the scams to dodge

  • Pnet, Careers24 and Indeed are the established boards; set up daily alerts.
  • LinkedIn dominates professional and corporate recruitment in Joburg and Cape Town.
  • Government vacancies (the Z83 route) are published on the DPSA vacancy circular — note that public-service applications use the Z83 form plus your CV, not the CV alone.
  • Walk-ins still work for retail and hospitality, especially at new store openings.

And the golden rule, because CV scams are rife in South Africa: legitimate employers never charge a "registration fee", "training deposit" or "uniform fee" before you start. A job that asks for money first is not a job.

One page, tested against the software

Larger South African employers screen CVs with ATS software before a human reads them. Simple formatting, standard headings, and the exact keywords from the advert get you through — run your CV through our free ATS analyzer to see what a robot sees, and read our ATS survival guide for the details.

Then keep it to one page (two if you have years of relevant experience), with a specific objective at the top — "Seeking a position as a warehouse assistant, Code 10 licence" beats "seeking growth opportunities" every single time.
