How to Write a CV for Jobs in Ghana
From Accra to Kumasi, the same five-second test
Whether your CV lands on a desk in Accra's Airport City, a bank branch in Kumasi, or a mining office in Takoradi, it gets the same treatment: a recruiter scans it for a few seconds and decides — keep or drop. Hundreds apply for every advertised role in Ghana, so those seconds are your whole first impression.
This guide covers what Ghanaian employers specifically look for, and the local details that most CV templates ignore.
The Ghana-specific essentials
National Service: state your status
For graduates, National Service is the first question on every recruiter's mind. Don't make them hunt for it:
- "National Service: Completed — Ghana Education Service, Tamale (2024); certificate available"
- "National Service: Currently serving, completing August 2026"
Many entry-level openings require the NSS certificate outright. A CV that answers the question instantly gets read further.
Education with the names recruiters scan for
Write WASSCE (with your programme — General Arts, Business, Science), then HND, diploma or degree. Polytechnic-turned-technical-university HNDs are solid currency in Ghana — name the institution in full ("HND Accountancy — Kumasi Technical University, 2023"). Still studying? Give the expected completion date.
One active number, with WhatsApp
Ghanaian recruiters call and WhatsApp before they email. One number, written in full, that you actually answer. If you change SIMs, update the CV the same day.
Your hustle counts — describe it properly
Between school and the office job, most Ghanaians have already worked plenty. On a CV, that work counts — if you write it as work:
- MoMo agent → "Operated a mobile money point, processing daily transactions and float for 50+ customers"
- Trading at Makola or Kejetia → "Sold goods in a high-traffic market: stock, pricing, negotiation and daily cash management"
- Susu collection → "Collected and recorded daily susu contributions for 30 clients with complete accuracy"
- Apprenticeship (tailoring, auto mechanic, hairdressing) → a formal qualification in all but name; state the trade, master and duration
- Church or community roles → "Organised monthly youth programmes for 100+ attendees: logistics, communication, volunteers"
Action verb plus number beats vague modesty every time. The full method is in our guide to writing a CV with no formal experience.
Where to apply in Ghana
Save the trotro fare for confirmed interviews — most hiring now starts online:
- Jobberman Ghana and JobWeb Ghana — the biggest local boards, with daily alerts.
- LinkedIn — Accra's corporate, banking, telecom and NGO recruiters search it actively.
- Company career pages — MTN, the banks, and the big retailers post directly; graduate programmes usually open once a year.
- Your network — many Ghanaian jobs travel by word of mouth. Tell people exactly what you're looking for, and give them a clean CV they can forward in one WhatsApp message.
And a rule with no exceptions: genuine employers never charge "protocol fees", "processing fees" or any payment to secure a job. Whoever asks is a fraudster — walk away, no matter whose name they drop.
Leave these off
- Ghana Card number — verification happens at hiring, not on a document forwarded around town. Keeping it off protects you from identity fraud.
- Date of birth, hometown, religion, marital status — not needed, and they only invite bias.
- A photo — not expected for standard applications in Ghana.
Name, phone, email, suburb and city. That's the complete list.
One page, software-proof
Ghana's larger employers filter applications with ATS software before any human reads them. Simple single-column layout, standard section names, and the exact keywords from the advert. Check your CV against the actual job description with our free ATS analyzer, and see the complete ATS guide for how the screening works.
A focused one-page CV — National Service status clear, hustle written as real experience, working number — is what turns applications into interview calls.
